2012 – 2022 Performance Analyst for National Teams
From 2008 to 2022, I was involved in international top hockey (mostly indoor) in various roles. From 2012 my role was performance analyst for the KNHB. In this role, I dealt with the question:
How can we give the staff and the team relevant (data) insights about their performance before, during, and after the game?
…so that they can keep making good choices under high pressure.
Role & Activities
- Live analysis of Dutch tournaments, (audio/video) communication with staff;
- Presenting findings analyses when preparing for Dutch tournaments;
- Contributing to the game plan of Dutch tournaments;
- Analyzing opponents;
- Motivating the team, using video and humor.
Challenges
Tournaments take place across Europe and present continuous challenges. For example, there were tournaments without a video tower or even enough electricity. There were also tournaments where the schedule was so busy that there was no time to get off my spot between matches (and so I had to have all data and footage ready for immediately after match). A few generic challenges that almost always recurred:
- How can we link individual player data to team data?
- How do we make relevant post-match data immediately available to players?
- What data (and how) do we forward to the staff?
- How can we motivate players with video content?
Results
Although the direct impact of my presence is not really measurable (success has many winners), the teams I have been involved with have achieved great results.
